Scottish salmon industry continues to favour fish oil

THE level of fish oil substitution in feed used by the Scottish salmon industry needs to increase greatly if the sector is to produce more farmed fish than the quantity of wild fish consumed. And while brands are available, driven by the sustainability ethos, which feature the use of vegetable oil as a partial replacement for fish oil, the vast majority of Scottish salmon is still grown on feeds where 100% of the added oil is fish oil. Speaking to Fish Farmer, leading fish nutritionist Dr Paul Morris of Skretting said the degree of substitution, in comparison with Norway, is relatively low. He said the resistance to high levels of substitution is stemming mainly from retailers.
