SCOTTISH farmed Atlantic salmon production is worth at least E350M per year at first sale and is a major employer in the Highlands and Islands. However, aquaculture output is threatened by diseases such as Infectious Salmon Anaemia (ISA), which has caused collapses in production of salmon in the Faroes and Chile and long-term problems in Norway and Canada. An outbreak of ISA infected six farms in southwest Shetland in 2008/9. The virus (ISAV) may have evolved locally or have been imported. Usually outbreaks of ISA have rapidly spread over large areas, this includes an outbreak in Scotland in 1998/9 (Figure 1). The 2008/9 outbreak, however, was confined to a small area: how was this achieved? Four factors, based on lessons learned from the 1998/9 outbreak, were critical.
