The intracellular metabolic cascade, which produces large amounts of reactive oxygen intermediates (ROIs) in a process known as the 'respiratory (or oxidative) burst', is a characteristic feature of vertebrate phagocyter (Babior, 1984), and is well known in fish (Lutter et al., 1986; Dayne & Levy, 1991).
