Emerald Ash Borer (EAB) is an invasive insect originally introduced from China to the Detroit, Michigan. It attacks and kills all ash (Fraxinus spp.) trees native to North America. EAB is the most serious forest pest in the eastern United States. As of January 2009 it has been found in 10 states. Minnesota and Maine have the two largest ash tree populations in the US and Minnesota's wetland hardwood forests are more than 50% ash. The Emerald Ash Borer is poised to dramatically change Minnesota's forests.The Emerald Ash Borer First Detector program is part of the federal "National Plant Diagnostic Network (NPDN) First Detector program that promotes the early detection of invasive, exotic plant pathogens, arthropods, nematodes and weeds.1" The EAB First Detector program is designed to help identify the first incidence of EAB in Minnesota. EAB First Detector volunteers are one of the first lines of defense against the establishment of EAB in Minnesota by helping to quickly identify the first occurrence ofEAB in the state and then in each county. Early detection will allow natural resource managers more management options. EAB First Detectors were also trained in ash seed collection. Collection of seed can help preserve the ash tree gene pool. Finally, EAB First Detectors help disseminate information to the public about EAB and preventing its introduction to the State.
