Before beginning to review the many quantity discount models that researchers have proposed, we devote Section 2 to try to convey an understanding of what quantity discounts are, why they exist, and how they are being used in industry. Section 2.1 describes the numerous reasons why quantity discounts may be offered. Section 2.2 discusses the different types of quantity discounts in existence. Section 2.3 reports insights from industry interviews and surveys, reflecting how the various quantity discounts are being used and what future research opportunities might exist. Section 2.4 concludes by referencing numerous real-world applications that have been reported in the literature.
