What consumers feel and prefer: Haptic perception of various wood flooring surfaces

Austrian consumers were invited to touch wood flooring surfaces with bare feet and hands wearing a blindfold. The objectives of the test were to ascertain whether they were able to consistently distinguish the properties of oiled parquet flooring, lacquered parquet flooring, and laminate flooring as well as their preferences. Our results show that the majority of the consumers were able to determine a difference between the flooring types with their hands and with their feet. They predominantly preferred the properties of the oiled flooring surfaces and there was no significant difference between women's and men's perceptions. The methods used in this experiment could improve future product development, sales tactics, and product presentations at the point of sale.
