Prospective Comparative Study of the Scarf and Ludloff Osteotomies in the Treatment of Hallux Valgus

To compare outcomes in patients with moderate to severe metatarsus primus varus following treatment with either the scarf or the Ludloff osteotomy One hundred fourteen feet (87 patients) with moderate to severe hallux val-gus were treated with a scarf or a Ludloff osteotomy. The first 57 feet were treated with a scarf osteotomy, but because of perceived technical complexities with the scarf osteotomy, the next 57 feet were treated with Ludloff osteotomies. Most feet also were treated with an Akin osteotomy, 51 feet in the scarf group and 52 in the Ludloff group. The mean age of those in the scarf group was 54.3 years (range 22-78) and the mean age of those in the Ludloff group was 55.7 years (range, 22-73) and only 4 patients were male, 2 in each group.
