Percutaneous Internal Fixation of Proximal Fifth Metatarsal Jones Fractures (Zones II and III) with Charlotte Carolina Screw and Bone Marrow Aspirate Concentrate: an Outcome Study in Athletes

A retrospective review identified 26 consecutive athletes who presented with a proximal fifth metatarsal Jones fracture between January 2007 and August 2009. The mean age of the patients was 27 years (range, 18 to 47). Seventeen of the fractures were traditional zone II Jones fractures and nine were zone III Jones fractures, or fractures that involved the fifth metatarsal diaphyseal. All were treated with a Charlotte Carolina screw and bone marrow aspirate concentrate within 14 days of injury. The bone marrow was extracted from the ipsilateral iliac crest; about 60 mL was obtained and prepared with a bone marrow concentration system (Harvest Smart-PReP 2 BMAC System, Harvest Technologies Corporation, Plymouth, MA).
