Impaction air sampling used to be the gold standard, while settle plates used to be considered a sufficient environmental monitoring technique, until active air sampling proved otherwise. A new active air-sampling method has emerged — gelatin membrane filtration — which offers greater accuracy and reliability over traditional impaction technology, and the even more antiquated settle plate method. Many proactive companies are taking notice and realizing that filtration might surpass impaction as thenew gold standard. Companies from all sectors — pharmaceutical, food and beverage, biotechnology, hospitals, and environmental protection — have already realized the importance of an active air-sampling program, which is why many have begun to exploregelatin membrane filtration. When it comes to foodborne pathogens, it is increasingly important to analyze all processes. If impaction sampling is shown to be inefficient, companies should upgrade active air-sampling programs. Proactive companies have recognized the benefits of an actual representation of air quality, available through the new technology of gelatin membrane filtration.
