Draft ofWaxman/Dingell food safety bill circulated before June 3 hearing

Henry Waxman (D-Calif.) and John Dingell (D-Mich.) unveiled on May 26 a draft of the long-awaited food safety bill the House Energy and Commerce Committee plans to steer through Congress in the coming weeks.Much to the food industry's dismay, however, the 116-page Food Safety Enhancement Act of 2009 includes new facility registration fees - as proposed earlier by Dingell - among other provisions that will likely trouble industry.The draft bill, which is based largely on Dingell's Food and Drug Administration Globalization Act, introduced back in January, will get its first airing at a June 3 hearing and is slated for subcommittee mark up soon after. The Senate is not expected to act on food safety legislation until this summer.
