Argentina restricts beef exports despite new opportunities

Argentina has advised its beef exporters that conditions are not favorable for fully lifting export restrictions, and the resulting instability is making it very difficult to capitalize on the recent downturn in Brazilian beef sales to the European Union and Russia (see preceding story). Government mandated export quotas, taxation, and price controls, coupled with labor union demands for double-digit salary increases, are contributing to simmering opposition to interventionist policies (see FCN Jan. 21, Page 14).
