Quality Control and Good Manufacturing Practices: Safety and Efficacy of Commercial Herbals

The increasing worldwide legitimization of herbs and botanical preparations for treatment of human health complaints is paralleled by ever-proliferating efforts to establish guidelines and standards for their regulation and control. Prominent among these are the initiatives mounted by the World Health Organization (WHO) and European regulatory bodies, individually and under the collective agency of the European Union (EU). Most notable among the latter is the series of monographs published by the Commission E of the German Drug Authority; 410 of these monographs concern 324 herbs.
