Bamboo is often treated as the errant thug of the garden. If included at all, it is banished to the outskirts of a garden, where its reputed aggressiveness can be contained. But this stereotypical view of bamboo isn't necessarily correct. Most commonbamboos are running bamboos, which are notorious for spreading anywhere and everywhere. But there are also clumping bamboos whose rhizomes arch upward, not outward like those of their overly aggressive cousins. Consequently, clumping bamboos form densemasses that increase ever so slowly--at most a few inches per year.
