To optimise the method of separation of belt conveyors it has been repeatedly recommended chiefly in the German literature in recent years that the belt speed should be controlled. The degree of filling j of the belt trough with phi = 1 should serve as reference variable for this control process. Hence high utilisation of the conveying cross-section at a lower belt speed if necessary should always be achieved. With such operation the energy consumption and thus the operating costs will be reduced. The contribution makes a critical examination of this recommendation. The parameters affecting the kinetic resistance in belt conveyors are described. Using the relationships of the individual resistances and the characteristic quantity "specific energy requirement" researched in the relevant literature, it is shown that speed control is misguided for energy saving purposes in the usual degree of filling ranges.
