MANY OF THE HOUSES in the Portland, Oregon, neighborhood in which my husband and I live rest on lots that are higher than the street. Erecting 4- to 5-foot-high retaining walls made out of stone, brick, or concrete is a common solution for dealing with these sloping lots. In most cases, these walls are placed right at the sidewalk to create a nice, level front yard—easy to mow, easy to maintain. Though this is a practical approach to the challenges presented by gardening on a slope, it's not the only answer.
