摘要

The spatial archetype of the sea relates to being immersed in space--surrounded by the softness of water, pine boughs, fog, a mature forest. I believe our love for such places harkens back to our earliest memories formed in the intrauterine sea within our mother's body--the first landscape of our lives. One way to recreate this sensation is to plant a bamboo grove or a garden in a dense woodland. When you were a child, where did you go for daydreaming, reverie, or reflection? Was it a special placeunder a rhododendron bush? A perch high up in a tree? A certain stone at the edge of a flowing stream? Or the window seat in your bedroom? As gardeners and designers, we can learn from these spatial memories and recreate the favorite places of our livesin our own backyards. We can inhabit once again the vantages in which we felt comfort, exhilaration, or awe, and thereby recreate in our gardens the solace and delight of that contemplative place.
