Heading into The Fertilizer Institute’s Annual Business Meeting this week, inevitably some of the discussions will turn to whether farmers will curtail fertilizer applications given current fertilizer prices versus the value of the corn crop. This is especially relevant to phosphate suppliers, as during years with poor farm economics farmers facing high costs historically cut DAP/MAP applications first, before considering reducing potash applications. Nitrogen demand by US corn growers is assumed to be inelastic.
