PotashCorp this week reported record profits in the second quarter thanks to higher prices and production of potash and other fertilizers. Net income rose to $840 million, 81% more than Q2 2010, sales were up 62% to $2.32 billion and the gross margin more than doubled to $1.17 billion. In the potash division, sales were up 75% to $1.12 billion and the gross margin rose 93% to $793 million. The Q2 sales volume of 2.5 million mt was up 32% and first half sales were a record 5.3 million mt. Q2 sales in North America of 800,000 mt were up 33% and represented a third of the total.
