Aspects of fermenting liquid pig feeds

The search for a reliable, cost-efficient and easy-to-handle substitute for an antibiotic growth promoter is still going on. Considered as a first choice alternative are organic acids and their salts, but pre-fermenting of liquid feeds might lead to the same results. Recently it was discovered, that pre-fermenta-tion of liquid feed might lead to the same results in terms of pH-value and anti-micro-bial effect than adding organic acids to feed. Reports from Denmark and The Netherlands give evidence for positive effects of feeding fermented liquid feed (FLF) on piglet performance. In a recent British study, the influence of feeding FLF on faecal bacterial flora and selected colostrum parameters of lactating sows was investigated. The study concluded that fermented liquid feed could be an important tool in combating enteropathogens in the gastro-intestinal tract of healthy animals and could result in improved litter performance and profitability.
