E. coli research pins new hopes on old DNA

SOME detective stories move along with leads taking an investigator to the next clue, while other stories have the detective poring over old evidence with a new set of eyes in hopes of finding something that was overlooked the first time. That's whatTom Besser, professor of veterinary microbiology at Washington State University, hopes to do with Escherichia coli O157:H7. Besser recently received a 1 million dollar grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Agriculture & Food Research Initiative to see if previous research on stopping the bacteria at its source -- cattle -- may be more effective once different strains of the bacteria are considered.
