When this editorial was being written, the World Bank had just issued a warning that 100 million people in poor countries could be pushed deeper into poverty by spiralling prices and called for an action plan for a long-term boost to agricultural production. The warning and action call came against the backdrop of riots in several countries sparked by hunger and steeply rising food prices.While dwindling energy resources, rampant deforestation and the imminent extinction of diverse animal species often dominate the news devoted to sustainability issues, the events that triggered the World Bank's concerns underlined the vital importance of food as a resource.
