Fallow weed control pays off

Higher levels of available soil nitrogen contributed at least as much as higher levels of stored soil moisture, leading to a 50 per cent increase in wheat and canola yields in recent NSW field trials of timely fallow management. This was the key finding in the central and south west NSW research undertaken during the 2010 and 2011 seasons in research sites at Gunningbland, Tottenham and Rankins Springs comparing timely weed control in fallow paddocks with no weed control. The research is funded by NSW Department of Primary Industries (DPI) and the Grains and Research Development Corporation (GRDC) through the Central West Farming Systems Water Use efficiency project.
