Although petfood sales are more likely to be confined to the more prosperous countries of Asia, it is worthwhile considering the opportunities in southern Asia. With the economic growth rate projected at 5-6 percent a year, this region is expected topresent great opportunities in pet food. With its large population India is at the forefront of development. Worldwide pet food sales are expected to be around dollar 37-40 billion by the year 2000-2001. Cat food will account for 45 percent and dog foodfor about 55 percent of the total sales. More than 35 percent of total sales should come from Asian-Australian region. Though much of the sales are likely to be confined to the more prosperous countries in Asia such as Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Singapore, Malaysia. Hong Kong, and the southern part of China, nonetheless it is prudent not to overlook the opportunities in southern Asia (comprising India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka. Bhutan), which accounts for 1.2 billion people.
