Guar gum gives aquafeed a better chew

Aqua feed needs a specific stability matching the needs of the species fed. Slow feeders should receive a pellet with high water durability, but that is not always easy to achieve. Wheat gluten is often used as a pellet binder. Since this is short insupply, alternatives are being looked for. Guar gum might be a solution. The water durability of shrimp feed is often a great problem. Insufficient water durability means not only losses of feed, but also water pollution with all the consequences for the health of the animals. A wide range of different substances has been tried by the feed milling industry. Only a few tire improving the water durability (stability) satisfactorily. The properties and perhaps the nutritional value of these substances, are mostly obscure and hardly documented. One favoured pellet binder is wheat gluten. Since it is in short supply, feedmills are searching for alternative substances. An alternative for wheat gluten could be guar gum.
