Environmental penalty discount for ISO 14001:2004 users

In late 2006, the province of Ontario, Canada, proposed its first financial incentive for the adoption of environmental management systems such as ones based on ISO 14001:2004. The incentive will flow from a significant redesign of environmental enforcement. Until now, Ontario's environmental enforcement has relied mostly on regulatory prosecutions in the criminal courts. While this form of enforcement has significantly improved environmental compliance over the past 25 years, it is slow and resource intensive.
