Two semi-dwarf hybrid oilseed rape varieties have made the HGCA Recommended List for the first time this autumn. Pioneer Hi-Bred's Maximus variety, PR45D03, has a special recommendation for the east and west, while Dekalb's DK-Secure is for use in allregions. So what's special about the semi-dwarf hybrid varieties, also referred to as low-biomass hybrid oilseed rape? Essentially they are very short, a characteristic which makes them extremely unlikely to lodge. They are the result of a cross, whereone parent variety has the dwarfing gene, producing an Fl hybrid semi-dwarf which expresses 50% of the characteristic.
