Light leaf spot heading further south and high levels of phoma stem canker have prompted one plant pathologist to advise growers to select varieties based on disease resistance and not just output. Growers who have failed to control phoma could see oilseed rape crop yields cut by 0.5t/ha this season, warned ADAS plant pathologist, Peter Gladders. Speaking at a KWS press briefing, he urged growers to complete their phoma sprays as soon as possible, especially if plants are small. "Roth-amsted predictions were for 10% infection in the first/second week of October and these were spot on. In the past week, we have seen significant spotting reappearing."
