Murdoch and Ice start new nursery season in fine style

As daylight hours become progressively shorter the main open season begins to draw to a close giving way to the nurseries. Last weekend saw a mixture of both, with several autumn opens held alongside a number of nursery trials. Starting its nurseryseason, the Ryedale Society held two trials. On Saturday at Button Rudby, North Yorkshire, Bob Harland (Sneaton) judged an entry of 38. Running was over a nice sized nursery course, which sloped, gently downhill to the lift. Despite being all fresh sheepthe Mule ewes tended to run better during the afternoon than morning, when they often tried to break hack to the holding pen. After competing that morning in her very first trial at the Northern Association, Ian Murdoch's Fran Ice ran at number 29. Shehad a faultless righthand gather, then dropped a couple of marks from her lift. Her fetch could not be faulted and only two points were deducted from her driving. Following her excellent outfield work she had some difficulty at the pen where seven markswere lost before she finally pull all three sheep in.
