At one of the dealer conventions I attended in 2002, Case IH's Jim Irwin told the audience that they needed to be doing more business with the assets they have, or the same level of business with fewer assets. I bought into that thought at the time and have seen no reason to change. Actually, when one looks at return on equity for the farm equipment retail business, it's obvious that dealers in general have settled for almost-permanent low returns on the investment of a great deal of capital. Those who are interested in long-term survival need to get serious about making their assets more productive, Well, where should they start?
