We aerate stored grain for a number of reasons: To cool it. To maintain a uniform temperature throughout the grain mass. To dry it. To rewarm it in the spring. Because it's not legal to add moisture to grain in storage. Some basic rules of thumb applyin designing an aeration system. To start with, the amount of air you need for aeration varies according to what you're trying to accomplish: For cooling or warming grain that is already dry, you need 1/20 to 1/10 cfm per bushel stored. For holding wetgrain, you need 1/5 to 1/2 cfm per bushel. For drying down grain in storage, you need 1/2 to 1.0 cfm per bushel.
