TopFlight Grain Co., Bement, IL, acquired a grain elevator at La Place, IL, 15 miles east of Decatur, through a purchase in 1981. Over the years, it became apparent that there were some challenges to solve at the 1.75-million-bushel facility. "We needed additional storage," says Operations Manager Eric Clements. "We were having to move too much grain at harvest instead of waiting for the markets to be more favorable." In addition, the facility's layout was inefficient, especially for handling specialty grains that required segregation (see the illustration on page 66).
