Worms, wormers and worming control: How performance and production can be improved with efficient control of parasitic elements

MANY ANTHELMINTICS ARE used at the wrong time and in inappropriate and often potentially dangerous ways. Farmers are creatures of habit, but just because they have traditionally wormed their farm animals at particular times each year with no apparentproblems, it does not necessarily mean they are using a product in the best and most cost effective way. Each season is different, due to variation in climate, weather and farm management - including previous land use and perhaps age and type of livestock supported. It is imperative for farmers to assess potential risks for each livestock age group's exposure to worms or ectoparasites at the beginning of the year. Annually, farmers' worming programmes should be integrated with grazing management. Seek advice from veterinarians, extension officers, the product distributor and/or manufacturer whenever necessary.
