Doctors on both sides of the "species divide" are increasingly promoting increased collaboration between human and veterinary medicine. Still, the many important health connections between humans and animals are better known to veterinarians than to human doctors. Physicians tend to associate animal/human health connections with only zoonoses and emerging pandemics. But, as veterinarians are generally aware, the benefits of interconnections between human and animal medicine extend far beyond infectious diseases. Recently, veterinary and human medical academics joined together to explore many of the fascinating overlaps in pathology between humans and animals. Closing gaps, creating conversations and forging bonds between our fields was the inspiration behind the first Zobbiquity Conference, held January 29, 2011. "Zoobiquity Conference: A Conversation between Veterinarians and Physicians Caring for the Same Diseases in Different Species" brought together over 200 veterinarians and human physiciansto discuss the same diseases in patients of many different species.
