Never a Dull Moment in the 2012 Legislative Session for the CVMA

This year CVMA has experienced one of the most interesting, productive, and at times, extremelychallenging legislative sessions in recent history. The CVMA is sponsoring significant legislation this year to extend a law pertaining to the administration of controlled substances by registered veterinary technicians and unregistered assistants. The CVMA is also actively involved with legislation that was introduced late in the session to determine best practices for the use of controlled substances by humane officers and animal control officers, as the drugs must be obtained from a veterinarian andhis or her DEA license is on the line. We have participated in discussions regarding the regulation of animal groomers, have supported an effort to ban landlords from mandating an animal be declawed or devoiced as a condition of rental tenancy, and havebeen part of a successful coalition on the sales-tax-on-services issue. And, in one of our biggest efforts for the year, CVMA members were activated to assist in a major grassroots legislative effort to educate assemblymembers about the misinformation regarding anesthesia-free dental teeth cleaning and the use of hand scalers, when a bill surfaced to allow for the practice to be expanded to laypersons. The CVMA has actively been at the table on all of these issues and we hope that the end of the legislative session will continue to be a successful one.
