Major P.E.I. livestock operation adds greenhouse cukes and tomatoes: consumers welcome year-round opportunity to buy local produce
Greenhouse cucumber and tomato production has been a welcome addition to the operations of Schurman Farms Ltd., a primarily beef and pork operation in Spring Valley, Prince Edward Island. The farm's new three-quarter-acre greenhouse, says Marc, offers a stabilizing effect when beef and pork prices "are flat." When planning the greenhouse, he looked at the range of produce imported on a weekly basis. "Why import if we can have it here?" asks Marc. "Islanders like buying their own products. And growing tomatoes and cucumbers seemed to make sense." Tomatoes and cucumbers, he says, are two of the most common greenhouse vegetables sought by consumers.
