In 1951, George Lehmann immigrated to Canada from Oldenburg, Germany. He had attended Oldenburg Trade School, well known for its horticulture program in which you study, one semester and then work in a commercial greenhouse the next semester. Georgeloved that system because whatever he was learning in theory he could apply right away with his placement. Another reason for liking this theory/apprenticeship program was the ability to raise money to pay for school. George and the other students got paid for six months of the year. The students got paid six marks/hour the first year, nine marks/hour the second, and 12 marks/hour the third year. George married Anna in 1952, and since day one the family has been involved in agriculture, ranging from field vegetables to bedding plants. In 1954, they rented two greenhouses and grew bedding plants in the old fish flats, by cutting the flat and putting 45 plants in it -- 15 plants/box and three boxes/flat. They were sold for three boxes for just 1 dollar. And remember this price was at the same time a car cost 1,000 dollar, and you could buy a home for about 10,000 dollar!
