Ten years on from the National Service Framework for Long-Term Conditions: How far have we come?

This month marks exactly 10 years since the publication of the National Service Framework for Long-term Conditions (NSF LTCs) (Department of Health (DH), 2005). The last decade has passed with substantial change in the NHS, namely the liberation of the NHS' shakeup (DH, 2010), which saw the end of primary care trusts, the abolishment of several organisations including the National Patient Safety Agency, and the creation of clinical commissioning groups (CCGs), the NHS Commissioning Board and NHS England. However, determining how much the NHS reforms may have had to do with the sections of the NSF LTCs that have not seen any progress is not the aim of this article. Determining where things have gone right and wrong, and where we can go from here in tackling the ongoing burden of long-term conditions is what needs exploring.
