Aconsignment sale is where Wilbur (Pete) Jansen bought his first Guernsey in the l950's. She was introduced into a herd, located in Forest Grove, Ore., that had most of the breeds at that time. Gentle dispositions and high butterfat content are two ofthe reasons Wilbur and his family decided the Guernsey breed was to stay a part of their herd, and so continues the tradition. Wil-Rene Guernseys, named after Wilbur and his wife, Irene, has 25 cows with a Rolling Herd Average of 17,200M. Pete's son, Mike, and his wife, Sherry, also milk about 55 Brown Swiss on the dairy. All cows are housed in a free-stall barn with loop stalls that were added a few years ago. Rubber tires topped with shredded straw maintain the floor of the stall area. Pasture area is utilized for the cattle eight months out of the year. The cows are milked in a 15-stall, flatbarn parlor.
