Mr. Levi states, "This book is not intended to be an overview of the Alaska Gold Rush...Rather, it is meant to provide a glimpse into the lives of the people of the age. This is a book of popular history." This is an extremely well researched and fascinating history of the "last great fit of gold fever in North America." The Alaskan Gold Rush lasted from 1880 to 1907 but forget the stylized, somewhat glamourous picture of the old prospectors and their trusty donkeys seen in tales of the California Gold Rush. This is raw guts, starvation, death and unbelievable endurance in the search for gold. Over 100,000 men and women of all ages, nationalities, religious convictions and moral (and otherwise) intent flocked to Alaska to find gold and, thus, help shaped the history of this wild demanding land.
