Rough First Quarter in Asia; Very Modest Global Growth Ahead The first quarter of 2016 was difficult especially in Asia. Using the Global Purchasing Managers' Index as a measure of world manufacturing activity, growth had slowed to nil by February (Chart 1) with the sharp downturn in China, continued weakness in S. Korea and Taiwan and a recent slump in Japan being key culprits.
