The latest International Energy Agency (IEA) monthly Oil Market Report (released March 14) finds that global refinery crude throughputs for first quarter 2012 are likely to rise by just 180,000 barrels per day (b/d), but should jump another 600,000 b/d in second quarter 2012, to 74.5 million barrels/day. As for crude prices, “concerns over dislocations to normal inter-regional trade deriving from the economic measures taken against Iran, and this more prosaic ongoing tightening in the supply/demand balance, have combined to lead prices higher by 20% since December,” the IEA noted.
