Are you fascinated by occasional visiting butterflies but not sure how to increase their appearance in your garden? While there are two types of plants, host and attraction, that encourage butterflies, all it takes is the chance planting of one attraction plant for a gardener to develop a lifetime interest. My planting experience occurred when 1 experimented with colorful leaf plants intended to add much needed summer color into my densely canopied woodland garden. As I planted coleus, I paused for amoment and noticed butterflies flitting around the newly added plants. Why, 1 wondered, were these visitors so quickly attracted? At the time, I was not aware that my woodland canopy was already the attraction, and I had simply enticed the butterflies to a lower level, for in central Virginia there are numerous native trees that attract butterflies.
