Asahi Glass Philippines, the country's largest glass manufacturer, said it is ready to make a USD 9-million investment to produce glass components for solar panels. In a letter to the Board of Investments, Asahi Glass said the facility is intended to complement the solar cell plant of a US-based semiconductor giant. The project would enable the production of low-iron, high-transmittance, tempered glass for solar panel applications and require an investment of USD 9 million for the acquisition and installation of imported capital equipment, parts and supplies. It would generate export revenues from USD 6 million in the first year to USD 10 million after a few years. The proposal follows the decision of American firm SunPower Corp., a subsidiary of California-based Cypress Semiconductor Corp., to invest in the Philippine's first wafer plant. The technology is the basis of the electronics and semiconductor industry.
