Oriental Cloisonne: Chinese and Japanese designs and processes

As for all enamel art in the method of cloisonne, such Oriental articles were made using metal bases with the superimposed designs structured with shaped, flattened wires [cloisons]. The cloisons served to define the outlines of images and emblems, to separate areas of contrasting hues and to act as controlled supports for the glaze. Within this definition, the cloisonne enamels of China and Japan developed in divergent methods and styles.
