Nutritional improvement through an alternative perspective

Malnutrition characterized by decreases in bodyweight is frequent in community-dwelling elderly and in nursing home residents and could be strongly predictive of mortality, independent of disease. Weight loss may be reversible by treating depression, reducing psychotropic drugs, food enrichment or providing oral supplements, and special efforts are necessary to accomplish this task. The following case presents a unique perspective of nutritional improvement, which has implications for how we consider undernourished elders and how we identify the factors that may influence nutritional treatment.
