Last year, we advertised the fact that there was to be a meeting in the County Hall, Exeter, to review the results of an audit of quarries working stone for aggregate in Devon (Geology Today, v.19. n.6, p.202, 2003) The audit was carried out by the consulting firm of David Roche with the active participation of the British Geological Survey, The Devon Stone Federation, Mineral Industry Sustainable Technology, Mineral Industry Research Organization, and Devon County Council, all fulfilling the terms of reference of the Aggregate Levy Sustainability Fund charged to the aggregates industry (Fig. 5). The audit took into its study 16 quarries within the county, working rocks ranging from hard Palaeozoic limestones, Carboniferous slaty Culm, the sands and gravels of Permian and Triassic ages, to Cretaceous and Tertiary gravels, extraction which has produced a range of different holes in the ground, presenting a variety of problems for after-care and possible use.
