This paper presents an approachto build and mobilize spatial thinkingin civil engineering education. Theapproach is based on experiences inthe Department of Civil Engineeringat the University of Manitoba, and isillustrated by describing pedagogicalstrategies used in undergraduate andgraduate teaching, and providingexamples of spatial learning by civilengineering students. The approachaddresses the need to build students'spatial thinking capacity by teachinggeospatial concepts and theory inconcert with practical application ofthe theory through hands-on experi-ence with geospatial technologies andsoftware, involvement in real-worldcivil engineering projects, and inte-gration with industry experts.Advancements of spatial thinkingtechnologies and their ubiquitous andrapid adoption by society challengecivil engineering educators to equipstudents with the advanced skillsrequired to meet rising expectations oftheir spatial thinking capacity.
