A tribute to the scientific career of Dr Andries Bruins

This issue of the European Journal of Mass Spectrometry isdedicated to the scientific career of Dr Andries Bruins. Fornearly four decades, Andries has contributed in diverse waysto the field of mass spectrometry. Those of us, students andpost-docs, academic and industrial scientists alike, who havehad the privilege to work closely with him, have benefittedfrom his intellect, his personal insights and his generosity—and the experience has enriched our lives in career-changingways. Andries' own career began in 1970 with fundamentalstudies focusing on gas-phase ion chemistry and ion frag-mentation, under the guidance of Professor Nico Nibbering,and has spanned the invention and development of severalanalytical instruments. His work not only led to the solutionof many challenging scientific problems, but helped changethe course of analytical chemistry in significant ways. Andries'major contributions helped to connect the analytical fields ofliquid chromatography and mass spectrometry (LC-MS). Itis therefore appropriate to review how this connection cameabout and to highlight Andries' scientific endeavors at keyjunctures during the development of LC/MS.
