According to the general trend in analytical chemistry, physical methods will gain in importance within the areas of process and quality control. To comply with these applications, reagent-free and rapid spectroscopic procedures without any sample preparation are required. In particular, infrared spectra contain high information content with regard to identification of pure substances, as required, for example, for raw materials entering the factory premises or the analysis of complex mixture samples for quality or process control. The available measurement techniques with fibre-optic probes allow the study of solid and liquid substances, but also of biological aqueous samples with components at per mille concentrations and lower.
