The increasing demand for highly accurate electronic presentation, storage of data and effective communication among pathologists and researchers means that the need for the correct tools is essential. Many areas of microscopy and image analysis are seeing the development of new instruments, approaches and technologies. Thus, as a result, these wide-ranging advances in imaging and image quality, expanding avenues of associated technology and increasing sophistication of quantitative software have revolutionised the scope of the traditional microscopy. Today, there is a drive for a much more complete and efficient way of investigating cellular and molecular processes. Many experiments use multiple sections of a sample to show the distribution of a certain molecule, and analysing these can take up many hours of the researcher's time and block the microscope for other users. Thus, technical advances and emerging virtual microscopy technologies and their applications in research and diagnostics is increasingly being utilised in the discovery of molecules, organelles and cell types for researchers in many fields, as well as medical student education and resident training. Furthermore, the capability now exists to see beyond the field of view of microscope oculars and utilise the virtual slide for a large variety of applications.
